Passing through Big Sur was nerve-wracking (for me at least) and beautiful at the same time. The views on Highway 1 is absolutely breathtaking but there is a zigzag road along this route that kept me at the edge of my seat. I was seriously in a panic mode for about 90 miles heading to Pismo Beach on the first day of our road-trip. We were trying to get passed that zigzag part of the road before it gets dark because we are not familiar with the area. We didn’t make a lot of stops to enjoy the scenic route that day because of our tight schedule but thankfully we had plenty of time the next day on our way back to San Francisco. We tried to take as much photos as we can and enjoyed the breathtaking views as we don’t know when are we going to have that chance again. We had so much fun exploring although we were tired from driving long hours with very little sleep as we did not arrive at Pismo Beach until just before midnight. We’d love to go back to Big Sur and go to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park to see McWay Falls. We tried to go there before heading to Pismo Beach but since we were in a hurry we didn’t really get to explore the area.
Consideredย as one of the world’s best roads (according to MSN’s, The world’s best road trips), I highly recommend this road trip to anyone as the photos doesn’t do justice of how beautiful and serene the views are. It’s absolutely spectacular! Truly a beautiful creation of God! ๐
Here are some of our photos ๐
Point Lobos is the common name for the area including Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and two adjoining marine protected areas: Point Lobos State Marine Reserve (SMR) and Point Lobos State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA). Point Lobos is just south of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, United States, at the north end of the Big Sur coast of the Pacific Ocean. (Wikipedia)
There were lots of people taking photos of the sea lions. It’s so much fun to watch them! ๐
Awww….adorable!!! ๐
…and the road trip resumes! ๐
It almost looks like it’s the end of the road!
The zig zag road is definitely not my favorite oh but the views are breathtaking!
Say cheese! Hehehehe!
The Big Creek bridge is a double-arched concrete bridge with half-arch side spans located on California Highway 1. Its completion in 1937 opened Highway 1 through the Big Sur region. (waymarking.com)
Behind us is the Big Creek Bridge.
I think down below is Pfeiffer Beach. Not sure if it is but it’s beautiful!
Rocky Creek Bridge is a reinforced concrete open-spandrel arch bridge in California, built in 1932. It is located in Monterey County a few miles south of Carmel-by-the-Sea and just north of the more famous Bixby Creek Bridge on the Pacific Coast Highway. As its name implies, it spans the Rocky Creek. A turnout with limited parking space exists to the northwest of the bridge, for tourist use. The vicinity ecology is noteworthy in that the marine waters at the mouth of Rocky Creek are a habitat for the endangered southern sea otter, E. l. nereis. Additionally, on a ridge above Rocky Creek is one of the few known habitats of Yadon’s piperia, a North American rare and endangered species of orchid. (Wikipedia)

โ How you look at a situation is very important, for how you think about a problem may defeat you before you ever do anything about it. California 1 truly is gorgeous. You’ve shown enough of its beauty Edelweiss. These are the reasons why I bumped down Germany and bumped up California as having the best road side views. It really is a darn magnificent drive. I drove there when it was raining so … ๐
