The Job I’d Do for Free

Daily writing prompt
What job would you do for free?

What job would I do for free? Without a doubt, that would be photography.

For me, photography isn’t just something I do—it’s something I genuinely love. It’s not about perfect angles or expensive gear. It’s about the in-between moments that say so much without needing any words. A laugh shared between loved ones, a quick glance, the way the sun hits just right—those little things that often get overlooked, but mean the most. Those are the ones I always want to hold onto.

Since my daughter was born, I’ve taken so many photos of her. Every stage, every giggle, every sleepy little face. And even now, I still reach for my camera when she’s just being her. Those candid, everyday moments—they warm my heart in ways I can’t explain. I think that’s what I love most about photography, how it depicts human emotion.

There’s one photo I’ll never forget. Over ten years ago, when my husband and I were living in California, we went on a drive to see the fall colors. We ended up at a lookout just before sunset. And there, sitting on top of a picnic table, was a man in a cowboy hat and boots, playing his guitar. The light was golden, the mood was peaceful—it felt like a scene out of a movie. I quietly snapped a photo. I’ve never shared it with anyone. Maybe because it felt so rare, so perfect. Maybe one day I’ll release it, maybe even ask for help finding him. I think he’d love to see it.

When it comes to something I’d do purely out of passion, photography is at the top of the list. I even love putting together slideshows and videos, stitching together bits and pieces of people’s lives into something they can watch and feel again. Whether it’s for a birthday, a wedding, or just a collection of quiet moments—it matters. It really does.

So yeah, photography isn’t just a hobby or a job—it’s how I connect, how I create, and how I keep memories alive.
