Olympic Sports that Inspires  Me

Daily writing prompt
What Olympic sports do you enjoy watching the most?

The Olympics have a special way of drawing you in. It’s not just about the medals or the competition—it’s about the stories, the hard work, and those unforgettable moments that make you feel something deep. Over the years, there are a few sports that have really stood out to me: speedskating, figure skating, and tennis. Each one has its own magic, and for me, they’ve come to represent something bigger—determination, perseverance, and athletes who give it their all and make you believe in what’s possible.

Speedskating has always been one of my favorites. It all started with Apolo Ohno. There’s something about the fast pace of short track that grabs you—the strategy, the anticipation of that split-second moment that could change everything. But it wasn’t just the sport—it was Apolo himself. His grit, determination, and work ethic have always inspired me. I’ve followed his journey for more than twenty years, and I even had the chance to meet him in 2010. He was just as amazing in person—genuine, kind, humble. You could feel the sincerity in the way he interacted, and I walked away from that moment even more inspired than before.

Then there’s figure skating, which holds a special place in my heart. Michelle Kwan has always been, and continues to be, one of the most elegant and poised athletes I’ve had the chance to watch. Every performance of hers felt like a blend of strength and grace—there was this quiet power in how she moved. She carried herself with such class both on and off the ice. I’ve never had the chance to meet her, but I truly hope one day I will. It would be such an incredible moment for me and my family.

Tennis is another sport that’s been with me for as long as I can remember, even though I didn’t start playing until my twenties. There’s just something about it that’s always pulled me in. The intensity, the rallies, the focus it demands—it never gets old. Last summer, my family and I went to our first U.S. Open, and it was such an unforgettable experience. Being there in person, feeling the buzz of the crowd, and even meeting some of the players made me appreciate the sport even more.

One of the players we met at the U.S. Open was Marina Bassols from Spain, and she left such a strong impression on us. Not only is she incredibly talented, but she radiates kindness and authenticity. While she hasn’t yet competed at the Olympic level, I genuinely believe she’s destined for big things. She has so much potential, and there’s a quiet fire in her that’s exciting to watch. Our daughter really adores her too—there’s something about Marina’s warm, down-to-earth presence that just sticks with you.

What ties all of these sports together for me isn’t just the thrill or the competition—it’s the people. These athletes carry something rare: they show up with heart, purpose, and a deep sense of who they are. Whether it’s speedskating, figure skating, or tennis, these sports have become a source of inspiration. They remind me of the power of resilience, and how passion—when it’s real—can truly move people.

Here’s to the ones who remind us of what’s possible, simply by staying true to who they are.
