I think one of the most underrated life skills is being adaptable and flexible.
And I don’t just mean being able to adjust when plans change or when life throws something unexpected your way. I think adaptability also has a lot to do with being open-minded.
When you’re able to see both sides of the equation, it becomes easier to understand that your perspective isn’t always the only one that can be true.
You can have your own beliefs, opinions, and experiences while still being open to someone else’s. You don’t automatically shut down another person’s point of view just because it’s different from yours. You listen. You try to understand where they’re coming from. And even if you still don’t agree, you can at least recognize why they may see things differently.
I think that kind of flexibility is so important in life because not everything is black and white.
Sometimes, two truths can exist at the same time.
Two people can go through the exact same situation and walk away with completely different feelings about it. One person’s experience doesn’t necessarily cancel out the other person’s.
I think being adaptable means knowing when to stand firm in what you believe and when to allow yourself to bend a little. It doesn’t mean changing who you are or agreeing with everyone. It just means being willing to look at something from another angle.
And honestly, I think that takes a lot of self-awareness and emotional maturity.
The older I get, the more I realize how important that is. Life changes. People change. Circumstances change. And sometimes, we change too.
Being flexible enough to grow with those changes without losing yourself in the process?
I think that’s a life skill that can take you pretty far.
