How Family Superstitions Connect Generations

Daily writing prompt
Are you superstitious?

Am I superstitious?

Yes, I am! I was influenced by my grandmother as a child, and over time, I became a believer on my own, even as a teenager and now. My grandmother believed in many superstitions, and I lived through the rituals. For example, if we were eating breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and my grandfather had to leave to travel before the rest of us finished our meal, we would spin our plates a full 360 degrees to ensure my grandpa would return home safe and sound. Another example: if you dropped a fork or spoon while eating, the superstition said that a male visitor would soon arrive if it was a fork, and a female visitor would come if it was a spoon. There are many more that I still follow to this day.

When I became a teenager, I stumbled upon a book called 1,100 Fascinating Facts, and one superstition from that book has stayed with me ever since. It’s about clipping your nails on different days of the week says that different days have different vibes. For example, if you clip your nails on a Monday, you’ll be healthy. On Tuesday, you’ll be wealthy. On Wednesday, you’ll receive good news. On Thursday, you’ll receive a new pair of shoes and on Friday, you’ll have sorrow. On Saturday, you’ll see your true love on the morrow, and on Sunday, you’ll be ruled by bad spirits. I’ve followed this superstition since I was a teenager, and I’ve never clipped my nails on a Sunday. I don’t know if there’s any truth to it, but I try to observe what happens when I follow the superstition, and for me, it’s been surprisingly accurate.

There are other superstitions that I believe in, but I won’t write them all here. These are just the ones I can think of right away. I’m particularly strict about the nail-clipping ritual. Maybe it sounds odd, but hey, we all have our quirks, and that’s what makes us unique!

How about you? Are you superstitious? What superstitions do you follow?
