Growing Up With Hello Kitty and Finding Joy in BTS

Do you have any collections?

Collecting has always been more than just gathering cute or cool things—it’s been a way for me to hold on to the memories, emotions, and connections that have shaped my life.

My journey began when I was just eight years old, with Hello Kitty. My mother, who lives in Japan, used to send me Hello Kitty items—stickers, stationery, little trinkets that made my heart light up. Those gifts were more than adorable; they were her love sent across the miles. That’s what truly sparked my collection. Each item carried a piece of her and brought a comforting sense of connection during my childhood.

Years later, I had the chance to visit Japan and spend time with my mother and stepfather. One of the most meaningful moments from that trip was visiting the Tokyo Skytree’s gift shop together. I picked up new Hello Kitty treasures that day, but more than anything, it was one of the rare times we did something lighthearted and fun together—something we hadn’t done since I was a child. Those pieces from that visit are among the most cherished in my collection.

Over the years, my Hello Kitty collection has grown into a little world of its own—stationery, plushies, clothing, accessories, homeware, and even rare pieces. It’s like a living scrapbook of my childhood, my love for design, and a deeply personal bond with my mother.

Now, watching my daughter fall in love with Hello Kitty too feels like the sweetest full-circle moment. She lights up just like I did—and it makes my heart so full.

A couple of years ago, I became part of the BTS ARMY—and my collection grew fast. Their music, message, and authenticity pulled me in completely. Not long after, I discovered BT21, and suddenly plushies, albums, photocards, apparel, and decor began finding their way into my home (and heart).

Collecting BTS and BT21 brought a different kind of joy—one rooted in inspiration, healing, and connection. Their message reminds me to keep going, to love myself, and to cherish the small moments that matter most.

From Sanrio sweetness to K-pop passion, every piece in my collection holds a story. They reflect where I’ve been, what I’ve loved, and the people who matter most in my life. And the best part? I get to share all of this now with my daughter.

Now, if only Hello Kitty and BTS would do a collab. Wouldn’t that be sweet?! I’m manifesting it! And with BTS reuniting in less than 30 days… nothing is impossible!

P.S. Sharing a few photos from my collection. I started an Instagram account for my family and I’s collections last year but haven’t found the time to update it lately. In case you’re interested, our account is called @hobbyhaul. I also share some of my BT21 and BTS merch haul and unboxing on Tiktok at @adayinthelifeofdefam. Thank you! 😊

Another BTS recipe book, a birthday gift from my sister last year. 💜

My husband surprised me with the BTS Butter Funko Pop a couple of years ago. It was a Walmart exclusive and difficult to find during that time. 💜

P.S. I apologize for being loud on the video as I couldn’t contain my excitement.😁
