Years ago, while working at the world’s most sophisticated lab, I was offered an incredible opportunity—one that still lingers in my thoughts from time to time. As a full-time employee, I had access to a prestigious gemology program run by the company, and it was completely free. Not only that, but the opportunity extended to my family—my husband and child could also benefit from this rare gift of education.
Everything was set. My paperwork was signed, the logistics made sense, and the school was conveniently located right at the company’s headquarters. I wouldn’t even have to travel. But at the very last moment, I hesitated.
I was scared I couldn’t handle both full-time work and school. I let doubt take the wheel. Instead of giving it a try and adjusting along the way, I backed out.
It was a missed opportunity that I still regret. A certification in gemology could have opened new doors, added to my passions, and created a foundation for something bigger. But I didn’t take the leap.
If I could go back, I would’ve trusted my instincts more and reminded myself that I’m capable of handling challenges, even when they feel overwhelming. I would’ve taken it one step at a time, knowing that growth often happens when we’re a little uncomfortable. I’ve learned now that hesitation can cost us more than trying ever will.
Sometimes, we make decisions we later regret. But I’ve learned not to let regret paralyze me. That experience taught me to be more aware of my hesitation—and to listen to the quiet push inside me that says, “Next time, be braver.”
Life doesn’t always give second chances, but we can always carry the lessons forward.
